Finding out which exercise regime is right for you can be tricky. Some people prefer heavy weight lift training, while others enjoy aerobic exercises and other forms of light weight training. Fortunately, yoga and pilates both build muscle and burn fat. They work to lengthen and tone the body, improve flexibility and enhance overall body strength. Yoga doesn’t mean just breathing deeply and stretching. There are different levels and variations of yoga and some yoga programs are very intense, with the goal to create a lean and muscular body.

Intense yoga

If you are interested in yoga for fat burning, take a look around at local yoga studios to see the different yoga classes that are available. This will give you an idea which yoga program would be right for you. You can also visit the library and find both books and dvds on yoga. If you’ve heard of Bikram yoga, you may know that it is an intense yoga variation that burns a lot of calories each session. Bikram yoga is practiced in a hot room, stimulating the body to sweat. Depending on the person and the intensity of the workout, practicing bikram yoga can burn anywhere from 500 to 1,000 calories per session. Bikram yoga is also a great aerobic exercise program.

Is yoga right for you?

Yoga is known to tone the body, burn fat and calories and improve flexibility. If any of those sound good to you, then you may want to consider trying yoga. Remember that there are different types of yoga, so one may not be right for you but that doesn’t mean yoga in general isn’t for you. You can also try pilates, which is somewhat similar to yoga. Your local recreation center may even offer affordable yoga classes, making it easy for you to give it a try. Either way, start out slow and work your way up to more challenging poses. That’s why it is a good idea to take a beginner class, giving you a structured environment for you to safely challenge yourself. Yoga stimulates the muscles, so it is important to be careful when you first begin so you don’t pull a muscle or overexert yourself.
