Generally, it starts with a minor irritation and occasional coughing is normal for any age but if the cough continues, then a serious problem could be the cause. Some coughs are from the common cold or seasonal allergies and children, although uncomfortable, get over this within a few days. Croups however, can sound like barking, but it too is a minor ailment that passes. Even allergies are bothersome and not something to worry about. Whooping cough is one serious case involving children but can be prevented with a vaccination. This cough is more common in babies and considered serious because it can develop into pneumonia or bronchitis. The medications for this are intended for older children and adults so it can be difficult to treat chronic coughing in children. Decongestants and antihistamines are found in this medication and if the condition remains severe then corticosteroids are added for the inflammation. Inhalers can deliver corticosteroids to older children and nebulizers for small children. Even humidifiers or de-humidifiers can be a cause for triggering this cough, as are small dust particles. </p>
